Oracle

There’s no question that Oracle is the most popular database in the world – it’s famous, easy to make use of and extensively documented. There are plenty of hot, new features that keep coming out in Oracle Database including robust code which makes use of constants for data type lengths, and JSON from SQL. You also get improved list tags and the ability to use long names.

Furthermore, the latest release, 18c, helps customers move to the cloud more easily with next level enterprise data management. Even release 12c has a wide range of functionality that can meet challenging requirements around scalability, high availability plus security and compliance. Oracle is great for big data and overall manageability, even when hosted in the cloud.

Top features of Oracle Database

  • You can handle big data with the Oracle NoSQL Database
  • It’s NoSQL, but Oracle database supports SQL and you can access Oracle Database from Oracle’s relational databases
  • Java/C API is used to read data and to write data

Pros and Cons of Oracle Database

We think it’s great that Oracle uses PL/SQL as a programming construct, and that the extensive peer to peer communities are excellent at resolving problems. There is also evidence that Oracle databases are highly secure, preventing data tampering in part thanks to very regular updates from Oracle.

However, Oracle is expensive putting it beyond many smaller organizations. Oracle also requires a lot of resources to install and run which may mean that you need to upgrade your hardware just to get Oracle going – for example, Oracle uses a lot of space.
